Early in the morning of March 18th, former DM&IR diesels 205, 214 and 201 were pulling a string of empty ore cars up to Proctor from the ore docks in West Duluth. Just after they crossed 2nd street there is a curved turn-out they need to go through. The turn-out was not completely set (aligned) or else the rails spread when the engine went over them – result was that the engines went on the ground and stopped very fast – two of the mini-quad (four ore cars locked together without couplers) went every which way as the rest of the train pushed them against the now grounded engines.
By the next day it was all cleaned up.
